4 Eco-Friendly Dry Shampoos
Some people say washing your hair everyday strips off natural oils and dries out hair and scalps out. If you’re into washing less for health, aesthetics or time, you’ve probably discovered the wonders of dry shampoo.
The kinds that come in aerosol cans are usually made with isobutane and propane which can affect your breathing. The cans aren't recyclable in your normal recycle bin and have to be dropped off at a "hazardous waste" location. Here are a few with natural ingredients and recyclable or zero waste packaging.
1. Bergamot Hair Powder | Alder New York | Brooklyn
Last week, I talked about Alder's Natural Beeswax Pomade and I was so excited to find that they make dry shampoos or "hair powders" as well! The founders, David and Nina are both designers and you can tell by their simple and striking package designs. The "Bergamot" scent is particularly intriguing to me but they have a variety to choose from. This one has great reviews on Birchbox from both ladies and gentlemen with different cuts and colors. For application, it is recommended to sprinkle a bit in your palm and then rub through your roots.
2. Lavender & Cocoa Dry Shampoo | Fat & the Moon | California
This one by Fat and the Moon, sounds divine as it is made out of cocoa powder and lavender essential oil. The maker, Rachel, says that the light brown color works with all hair types and doesn't dull the color of your hair like some can. What I love about her products is that they are made with organic and locally-grown ingredients. This adds to the sustainability as it cuts down on the fuel consumed and emissions released during the transportation of the ingredients to the place of production. Rachel is also intentional about using recyclable packaging and I love her hand-drawn label designs!
3. Lavender Dry Shampoo | Miss Violet Lace | Dundas, Minnesota
I really like the super simple package design on this one and how it will go with most clean bathroom decor. The jar still adds a bit of old-world-apothecary charm and is recyclable. This one is lavender scented as well and has a hint of vanilla cream!
4. Organic Cornstarch or arrowroot powder in a Vintage Container
Another eco-friendly dry shampoo option that Bea Johnson from Zero Waste Home uses is organic cornstarch that she buys in bulk. You can find it at most health food stores as well as organic arrowroot powder that can be used as a hair powder too! If it works well for you, it can cut down on packaging a lot as you can get so much in one bag. If you don't have a store with a bulk section near you, buying a large bag from the baking section of the grocery store will work too. You can use a refillable shaker like this mid-century one from Kibster or if you prefer to apply it with a brush, you can store it in a vintage tin or jar. I think this Parisian face powder tin would be perfect!
Shoot me a note with your thoughts and ideas! Have you tried any of these? What has or hasn't worked for you? Can I help you come up with a solution to any challenges you have with living a simple and sustainable life?
