The Beauty and Fragility of Nature

Today, I stumbled upon a soul of the same kind at the library. I was searching for some words that really resonated with me and just when I was about to give up I found this small little book of poems by Judith Roche, called All Fire All Water

Her words spoke to me and moved me as I think poetry does when it's written by someone who has a similar perspective to our own. Someone who's fascinated, inspired and saddened by the same experiences in life. What made me read Judith's book from cover to cover in thirty minutes was how she juxtaposed the profound beauty of the natural world with her observations on how humans can contaminate it.

In one poem she'll be talking about the beauty of bees and how their intricate system is foundational for our planet and the next poem will seep sadness about the decline of bees around the world. Everyone who finds beauty and need in something, is equally saddened by the contamination and lessening of that thing. This is how I feel about nature and the planet.

There's this tiny, quiet beach I've been going to almost every day after work where I've found immense peace. Half the time, there's a young, great blue heron hanging out with me that's either quietly resting or intensely fishing, with it's eyes piercing the water. The other half of the time, there's a mother duck with her four fluffy ducklings munching on seaweed that grown in the shallow waters.

I find so much restoration in this cove that I'm super mad and sorry when I see plastic bits and bags swirling around with the same seaweed that the baby ducks eat and the same water that the fish swim in and the heron fishes in. I wish we were more careful people. I want to take the trash away, but I wish it was never there. In this mindset, I felt a bond with Judith Roche as I'm reading her poem:

I'm always trying to reduce the amount of plastic that I purchase, especially disposable plastic that has a better chance of ending up outside somewhere. It's why I look for products that are either biodegradable or impossible for animals to consume.

I highly recommend All Fire All Water for perspective on the beauty and fragility of nature (and life in general). Let's both try to enjoy the healing power of getting outside every day, even for a little bit, and work together to restore what's been damaged.

I would love to hear your thoughts, feedback and where you've been finding beauty lately! You can leave a comment or shoot me an email.

Sincerely,
Lexy
